Janelle! I followed The Style Eater back in the day and absolutely fell in love with your writing style and aesthetic and all of your recommendations and I'm honestly so happy that you started a Substack - I can't wait to read more!
Longtime Insta lurker/follower here. I'm so excited for this newsletter! I started really leaning into romance the last couple of years and I am ... much happier for it, ha. Sometimes I feel my standards are too high, and there's nothing quite like the disappointment of reading an extremely well-hyped romance and then not feeling it. (But that's okay! We all have different tastes!)
Three romance books I've loved recently are Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross (YA / young woman finds a magic typewriter that lets her exchange letters with a mystery recipient/sender she thinks is her brother ... but is actually her handsome work rival [!!!!]); Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison (cute, steamy, cozy, not plagued by 400 pages of miscommunication); and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna (fantastical, magical, big found family vibes).
Looking forward to future editions and to all the cool links/recs to come.
Thank you so much! OMG so divine rivals and irregular witches are two of my absolute FAVORITES!! Such great recs. Everything Rebecca Ross does is incredible btw. And I absolutely adore mandanna’s writing. I will definitely add Lovelight farms to my list!
So glad to hear you enjoyed those, too! :-) I didn't love the sequel to Divine Rivals as much as the first book, but I still miss that world and those characters. I have another one of her books on my hold list at the library, which I'm looking forward to. I'm also going to check out the other books recommended in the comments.
And I am SO excited for Mandanna's new book, which I think comes out in April!
Welcome to Substack Janelle! I am so excited for the upcoming posts. I love the recipe recommendations! I will put the ingredients for that soup on my shopping list. Also, I want that Gap shirt- can you text me what size I should order :) AND I haven't read anything by Emily Henry, but will add to my list now. I am in a new book club so when I host I will suggest romance novels. We are reading Man's Search for Meaning right now- no romance.
Congratulations on your substack Janelle! Fellow new mama and romance/fantasy novel enthusiast here. Can’t wait to read each week and looking forward to all your wonderful recommendations!
Last year I *loved* Mrs. Nash’s Ashes (very emily Henry-esque) and I beg everyone to read A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting (and the second book, A Lady’s Guide to Scandal).
I had to come back to find this comment and say thank you for the Lady's Guide rec! I just finished the first book and LOVED it. I'm reading Scandal now and wish Irwin had multiple more books published for me to read!
Omg YAY! It’s so delightful, no?? I tell everyone about these books because I want her to write them forever. A not as great but still charming book is A Most Agreeable Murder - less sharply smart as Sophie Irwin but still very satisfying in that vein!
Hi Kerry!!! Mrs. Nash’s Ashes is in my Libby library RIGHT NOW! What a wonderful coincidence--it’s my next read! Adding both A Lady’s Guide... to my list. Thank you!
You know I don’t read and I’m going to read :)
Love ya kels 🤍
Janelle! I'm in awww of your writing style. I'm very happy you get to have this creative outlet again. Can't wait to keep reading!
Thank you so much Heath!!

I recently read them too and they’re an absolute delight! Everything I love in a regency!

Update: LOVED Mrs Nash’s Ashes!
Hi! Yay, can’t wait to hear what you think of both - A Lady’s Guide is exactly what a I want in a book - clever, witty, a little wink.
